"I'll find us a consultant." said the ED.
"What is a Management Letter?" asked the ED
"Ask the Auditors." said the Board Treasurer.
"How do I help a donor understand our financial information?" asked the staff person.
"Ask the Board Treasurer" said the ED.
"Our Nominating Committee is not functioning very well." said the ED.
"Should the banker who handles all our money be chair of the finance committee?" asked a new board member.
"He gives us a good discount for all he does." said another board member.
Whether or not you've heard these questions, it is certain that they are on peoples' mind. And it's a good thing.
So the question is, ."Who should be teaching whom?"
The often expressed lament is "We need board development." But what does that mean? I've suspected that it likely means board or staff education.
While there isn't a simple answer, it is clear that somebody needs to be figuring it out in your organization. And everybody needs to recognize that in the best situation it is a collaborative effort.
Here are 5 possible options.
Assume you have the skilled people you need in the positions mentioned in the above examples. Now decide who is the teacher and who is the student. You may even come up with other possible teacher/student combinations.
* ED teaches Staff
* ED teaches Board
* Board Chair teaches Board
* Committee Chair teaches Board
* Subject Expert teaches All
