Too often we overlook the basics, the nuts and bolts of what we do. Or the board meetings have gotten into a rut…. did I hear an OUCH out there?
So, here’s my list of 3 Things Every Board Member Must Know … and it’s really the most basic information.
1. What is the biggest gift we received last year? And bonus points if you name the donor.
Don’t you think it’s important for EVERY board member to know this – and be prepared to say “Thanks!” when they see them? Have you had many donors complain that they are thanked too often?
2. What is our organization’s annual operating budget?
It gets approved at a meeting, but maybe it doesn’t stick in mind. It should. And a periodic report that shows actual income and expenditures to date compared to the budget is a big help.
3. What are our three largest sources of operating income?
It may surprise you but I’ll bet only one or two of your board members can answer this. Beyond the gala, auction or memberships, most probably don’t know any other sources of income.
It will be a positive experience if you give prizes for those that answer all 3 correctly.
