So put on your coach hat and let's think about three ways to help your donors make bigger and bigger gifts.
Team mates work together. They practice together. And they learn together. How often have you told a donor that the idea you presented to them, and they supported, didn't really work out as expected. Fund raisers who engage donors in honest discussions about results encourage them to trust you.
Second, be a great listener. The more you can engage them in discussions about your work, the more support you will find. Who says you need to be the expert ... have all the answers? Good nonprofit activity is a work in progress. Encourage others to participate in the thinking about ideas and strategies. And don't do all the talking.
Third, be a strategist. While building the team and listening to your donors you may engage them even more by offering pro/con options. It's easier to participate in conversations with people who don't have the subject knowledge that you do if you give them some structure to think about. Such as, "Selecting new venue on Main Street for our work has some good news and some bad news. Help us think about how to evaluate these points."
Another way to think about strategy is to consider possible outcomes. Like pro/con options, this discussion allows you to suggest the consequences of your fund raising activity. Doing this engages your donors in helping you evaluate and measure potential results. That really makes people feel a part of the team.
I bet you'll be amazed at the "scores" if you think of yourself as a coach to your prospects and donors.
